As initially designed with Cyril Manyara, TimeZone builds bridges between the cultural, political, and economic divides that lie along time zones across the Northern and Southern hemispheres. We are interested in connecting public spaces in communities of diverse circumstances through technology. The eastern time zone, the example used here, extends from the Arctic Circle and territories claimed by Denmark, across North America and the Caribbean to Peru in South America.
The project began as an exploration of ways to empower diverse people on a global scale through the public infusion of existing -- and primarily private -- communication technologies. Located along sidewalks, in school yards, store windows, and in parks and plazas, these communication pods are intended to enhance the discussion of everyday events and activities. It is the hope of this project that dialogue between people of this kind will engender change and empowerment through knowledge, and will invigorate public spaces with new vitality and purpose.
The project began as a competition project with Cyril Manyara. It is now an ongoing investigation with the Van Alen Institute. Please see the website blog for more information.
